At the age of twenty-six, I retired from a life as a professional ballerina/musical theater performer in NYC. I felt lost and completely disconnected. One of the first things I realized was that I had no idea how to care for myself much less love myself. All I knew was dance classes, rehearsals, and one or maybe two meals a day to stay thin. When my dance contracts were over, I went back to my hotel job and started auditions again for the next contract. I loved this life, but it was destroying my body.

It was not until I became a personal trainer for World Gym at Lincoln Center a year later that I realized the importance of self-care and much later the importance of self-love.

When I became a physical therapist I read the book, Power VS Force by Dr. David Hawkins and understood for the first time the profound importance of our thoughts and the energy that they carry. High vibrational frequencies such as love are what the body recognizes as truth. Fear, anger, frustration, anxiety . . . the body recognizes as false. We create these lower vibrational frequencies and our body doesn’t like them.

4 Ways You Can Care For and Love Yourself

1. MOVE YOUR BODY – Are you too tired to exercise? We have 300 joints in our bodies so we’re actually divinely made to move. Take a stroll outside in the morning for 5-10 minutes before your bath/shower. This short bout of time actually invigorates you and your heart and lungs will feel cared for and loved. According to Edward R. Laskowski, M.D. from the Mayo Clinic, “Even brief bouts of activity offer benefits. For instance, if you can’t fit in one thirty-minute walk, try three ten-minute walks instead. What’s most important is making regular physical activity part of your lifestyle”.

2. STRETCH – Have you ever watched your animals when they wake up and they start to stretch? Well, we’re animals as well and our bodies need to create space between those 300 joints. Take a beginner yoga class or a stretch class at your gym. I have a morning stretch video that I give to all my patients. If you would like it just subscribe to my newsletter at and it goes right to your inbox (check your junk mail just in case it goes there).

3. THOUGHTS – What have your thoughts been about this week? Are you feeling angry, fearful, anxious, frustrated, are you experiencing burnout? Go ahead and feel these thoughts, honor them, but don’t linger there. Do steps 1 and 2 then go to step 4.

4. JOURNAL – Why write your thoughts down? Writing whatever you’re feeling allows your body to not hold these emotions inside. Emotions may cause physical pain – writing your thoughts down allows you to feel what’s happening and figure things out. If you’re spiritual like me, God/Universe/Inner Wisdom/HolySpirit listens when you write. Your burden may actually lighten and thoughts jump back up to higher vibrational frequencies of peace and love.
